Background:
Nearly 2/3 of the population depends on Agriculture in the State
of Gujarat. Contribution of Agriculture sector to the state’s
domestic product is significant.
Possibilities with regard to value addition, processing as well
as small enterprises as an extension of basic farming are immense.
If this is ensured the income of the farmers would increase manifolds.
Food processing sector is a very interesting option with regard
to value addition processing and diversification for the farm sector.
A variety of schemes and plans are already implemented by the Government.
However, it has been seen that most schemes and programes are more
relevant to organized large medium organizations and therefore there
exists a niche possibility of launching focused agri-business development
programmes for small, micro and cottage enterprises. Also such ventures
have a potential of addressing large number of beneficiaries and
especially farmers.
When nearly 30 % of Horticulture produce are wasted every year for
want of adequate storage, post harvest and transport infrastructure,
such interventions would help harness potential of Horticulture
sector. Similarly, the concept can be applied to cereals, pulses,
oilseeds and variety of other options.
This programme is designed to provide persons involved in agricultural
and rural development, an opportunity to realize and understand
Agri-Business as an enterprise option. This programme will also
help in developing a cadre of professionals for Agri Business and
Food Processing.
