News - June, 2008

From the President's Desk

India is in the grip of inflation. It is a situation in which we need to pay much more for less of anything that we need, whether it is milk or vegetables, our food items or cooking gas. Inflation therefore is rightly described as hidden monster. It pinches hard. The government tries to rein in the price rise by one or another measure. But far from mitigating the cost of living, they tend to limit growth with its undesirable consequences.

We hope the monsoon will be normal this year too and we can expect another good agricultural season. In the meantime, the question that we need to address to ourselves is: Can we do something to fight price rise? I feel we can. By taking simple steps, like pooling cars to go to offices or for shopping thus reducing petrol consumption. We can trudge small distances. We can forego rice or wheat once a week. Eating boiled vegetables can help us cut down on edible oil use. To avoid eating out there can be get-togethers among us with home made dishes. There should be a steely resolve to buy only when it is necessary. All these cumulatively nurture and promote effective consumer resistance. At the same time, it is a question of doing things to help ourselves. The outcome will be decidedly positive. As they say, little drops of water make a mighty ocean.

Swami Suddhananda addressed on a series of lectures, ‘Life- Tears and Smiles’. It was an extremely enlightening series as well as being highly motivating. He also released two books written by Mr. Narsinhbhai Patel, ‘Motivate yourself to Win’ and ‘Shape your Destiny’.
Swamiji conducted a workshop for students on ‘Self Knowledge for Higher Achievement’. The youth today must know that just as external success is important, internal knowledge about the ‘self’ is also essential. External success without internal growth is not complete!!
The summer programmes have been a resounding success with 3500 students having attended the workshops!
