SUMMARY
The European Union (EU) is a unique political and economic union of 27 sovereign member states spanning Europe. Covering approximately 4.2 million square kilometers—roughly the size of India—it unites nations from Ireland in the west to Cyprus in the east, with a combined population exceeding 447 million people and imports of $2880 billion in 2025. India’s exports to the EU-27 in FY 2024-25 (April 2024–March 2025) totalled approximately $75.85 billion USD. This represents 2.6% of EU’s total imports.
The India-EU Free Trade Agreement (FTA), concluded in January 2026, is projected to significantly boost India’s exports to the EU-27 by enhancing market access and eliminating tariffs on key sectors like textiles, pharmaceuticals, engineering goods, and chemicals. Bilateral merchandise trade is expected to reach $250 billion by 2030-31, up from $136 billion in 2024-25, implying India’s exports could grow from the current ~$76 billion to around $120-130 billion annually by 2030. This represents a potential 60-70% increase in Indian exports to the EU over five years, supporting India’s $2 trillion total export target by 2030 through diversified markets and 2-3 million new jobs in export sectors.
Considering the current geopolitical uncertainties, this development presents a significant window of opportunity for Gujarat exporters to seize the opportunity to increase and diversify exports.
