For as long as Gujarat’s steel and aluminum exporters have been doing business with European buyers, the rules of the game were well understood. Your buyer in Germany, Italy, or the Netherlands made their sourcing decision based on four parameters — price, quality, availability, and logistics. It was a formula that Gujarat’s export community mastered over decades, building lasting relationships and growing market share across European industrial supply chains.
That four-factor equation has just become a five-factor equation. And the new factor is one that most exporters have not yet had to deal with – CARBON.
From 1 January 2026, the European Union now requires every importer of steel and aluminum products to account for the carbon emissions embedded in the goods they purchase from outside the EU. This is the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism — CBAM. This law is financially binding, and it affects every Gujarat exporter shipping steel or aluminum to Europe.
Here is the business reality. If your production process is carbon-intensive and you cannot document your emissions accurately, your European buyer carries a higher CBAM cost on your goods. That cost will either come back to you as price pressure, or your buyer will quietly begin looking for a lower-carbon supplier who makes their compliance easier.
This workshop exists for one reason — to make sure that does not happen to you.
CONTENTS
- Demystify CBAM
- How carbon trading works
- What your obligations are
- How to measure and report your emissions
- How your customers register on the EU system
Most importantly, we will show you how Gujarat exporters — particularly those feeding scrap steel or aluminum in Electric Arc Furnaces will not just surviving CBAM but using it as a competitive weapon to win more European business.
Over the next few years, CBAM will extend to all products, and other countries will also start imposing these taxes. Don’t treat CBAM as a cost but as a strategic advantage.
