From Pay check to Portfolio: Investing Tips for Women Professionals
Written by : Ms.Manshika Mehta, Student, GLS University
Let’s be real: making money feels empowering — but growing that money? That’s where the real power lies.
Often, especially as women, we find ourselves wondering: “Okay, I’ve started earning — now what?”
Where should it go? How do I invest it? What if I mess it up?
These are some of the most common questions we all grapple with — sound familiar?
Well, that’s exactly why I decided to write this blog — to help break down the world of investing into simple, everyday language that anyone can understand.
Isn’t it a little surprising that the moment we start earning, we feel on top of the world — powerful, independent, and proud. But if we’re being honest, many of us still feel uncertain, even overwhelmed, when it comes to what to do with that hard-earned money.
Sometimes, we pass the financial baton to the men in our families who’ve been doing it for years. We tell ourselves, “They’ve got this,” or “What if I lose it all?” And just like that, we take a step back from our own financial freedom.
But have you ever stopped to ask why we do that?
The truth is, many of us don’t trust ourselves enough when it comes to money — or we’ve simply never been taught. We assume someone else knows better, and we fall into the habit of staying on the sidelines. But what about the women who don’t have anyone to guide them? Or the ones who suddenly find themselves responsible for managing it all?
That’s when it hits you — this is a tough nut to crack.
So here I am — Manshika — kicking off this blog with the aim of simplifying investing for you. I’ll walk you through the basics, bust the jargon, and help you build the most valuable asset of all: confidence in yourself.
Investing 101: Your Money, Your Rules
What is investing, really?
In simple terms, investing is just telling your money to stop being lazy. If it’s sitting in a regular savings account doing nothing but earning a tiny bit of interest (we’re talking the kind that barely buys you a coffee at the end of the year), then guess what? It’s chilling — when it could be working.
Now, imagine this: every rupee (or dollar) you earn is like a little employee. If you keep it locked in your wallet or just let it lie flat in your bank account, it’s like hiring someone and making them sit at a desk with nothing to do. Waste of talent, right?
Investing is how you put that employee to work giving your money a task, a purpose, a growth plan.
First Things First: Lay the Groundwork
Before you jump into the world of stocks or real estate, take a moment to get your house in order.
Step 1: Build Your Emergency Fund
Save at least three to six months’ worth of living expenses in an easily accessible savings account. It’s your financial safety net — because life will happen, and we must be prepared when it does.
Step 2: Get Rid of High-Interest Debt
If you have credit card debt or other loans that have extremely high interest rates, prioritize paying them off. Paying off debt may sometimes earn you higher returns than any investment.
Investment Options
Here’s a basic list of where you can start investing
- Mutual Funds and ETFs
These are similar to money baskets containing a combination of stocks or bonds. Rather than selecting individual stocks, you invest in the entire basket — simple, lower risk, and oftentimes handled by experts.
Tip: Look for index funds with low fees. They are the set-it-and-forget-it type of investors.
- Retirement Accounts
These include options like NPS or PPF in India, or 401(k) and Roth IRA abroad. They help you grow money for your future and often come with tax benefits.
Start early, even with a small amount. Time is your greatest ally here.
- Real Estate
Buying property can be a great long-term investment — but it’s not for everyone. It usually needs a big chunk of money upfront, so explore this once you’re more financially stable. - Investment Apps like Angel one, Upstock
Don’t want to get too technical? That’s okay. Smart apps like Angel one that manage your investments based on your risk level — like having a financial planner in your pocket.
Remember: Technology is your friend. Let it work for you.
The Power of Asking Questions
One of the biggest blocks we face is the fear of sounding uninformed.
But here’s the truth: there’s no such thing as a stupid question when it comes to your money.
Ask | Research | Learn
Talk to people who’ve been there, Reach out to a financial advisor if you can.
The only dumb question is the one you don’t ask.
You’ve Got This Girl
Investing isn’t just about growing wealth, it’s about freedom, choice, and peace of mind.
It’s not about beating the market. It’s about backing yourself and building a future you’re proud of.
If you’re sitting, there wondering whether you’re “ready” to invest let me tell you:
You’re more ready than you think.
You don’t need to know everything. You just need to start.
And by reading this blog, you already have.
