The landscape for engineering exports from India to the United Kingdom and the European Union has transformed dramatically following the implementation of new Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) and the landmark 2025 UK-EU Trade and Cooperation Agreement. These developments have created unprecedented opportunities for Indian engineering manufacturers, particularly in sectors such as steel, aluminum, machinery, and transport
equipment, by reducing tariff barriers and streamlining regulatory compliance.
The India-UK Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) officially came into effect on July 15, 2026. The agreement aims to nearly double bilateral trade in goods and services from the current roughly $56 billion to between $100 billion and $120 billion by 2030. In addition, by 2030, India-EU trade is expected to rise from present $135 billion to over $200 billion.
For Indian exporters, the post-FTA environment offers three strategic advantages:
- Preferential market access with zero tariffs and quotas on goods that comply with rules of origin, making Indian engineering products more price-competitive in both markets.
- The alignment of UK and EU emissions trading systems means that Indian exporters who invest in carbon-efficient production can now access both markets without facing the full burden of the EU’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM).
- The enhanced regulatory cooperation between the UK and EU simplifies certification processes, reducing time-to-market for engineering goods.
However, success in these markets requires more than just cost competitiveness. Exporters must navigate complex regulatory frameworks, understand evolving sustainability standards, and build strategic partnerships that align with the green transition priorities of both the UK and EU.
